I am pleased to be part of The Dark Between blog tour! I have today, a wonderful giveaway for you, as well as a lovely guest post from author Sonia Gensler. I can’t wait to read this book–and I’ll just bet you feel the same way! Read on to find out how to enter the contest!
At the turn of the twentieth century, Spiritualism and séances are all the rage—even in the scholarly town of Cambridge, England. While mediums dupe the grief-stricken, a group of local fringe scientists seeks to bridge the gap to the spirit world by investigating the dark corners of the human mind.
Each running from a shadowed past, Kate, Asher, and Elsie take refuge within the walls of Summerfield College. But their peace is soon shattered by the discovery of a dead body nearby. Is this the work of a flesh-and-blood villain, or is something otherworldly at play? This unlikely trio must illuminate what the scientists have not, and open a window to secrets taken to the grave—or risk joining the spirit world themselves.
The Dark Between, a supernatural romance about the powers that lie in the shadows of the mind, is perfect for fans of Sarah Rees Brennan, Alyxandra Harvey, and Libba Bray.

The Dark Between opens with a séance, and it’s clear from the start that it’s a fake. The medium, Miss Martineau, is a charlatan who exploits homeless children and gullible, infatuated gentlemen in order to perpetuate her fraud.
Most mediums were women, and many of them may have been attracted to mediumship because it offered a way to have power, prestige, and even wealth in a way that wouldn’t compromise their reputations as ladies, particularly to those who recognized Spiritualism as a religion.
How did this affect the patrons? You can imagine that a woman desperate to contact a dead loved one might feel more comfortable being guided by another woman. Perhaps men also felt more at ease communicating with spirits with a gentle lady’s help. In some cases, these men and women also found themselves physically drawn to the mediums. It’s no fluke that many of the most successful female mediums were young and attractive, for fraudulent mediums capitalized on their own physical assets to encourage emotional attachment from their patrons.
And I can’t conclude without mentioning one of my favorite novels about a possibly shady (possibly not?) female medium, Sarah Waters’ Affinity.
