Bookish Bundles: Contemporary YA

9 COMMENTS • This post is filed under: Bookish Bundles

Ruby’s Bookish Bundles is a new feature I’m starting here on the blog. In it, I’m going to post about three books:

I love discovering new books, and I love sharing about the books I discover. However, I’ve been wanting to do something a little different from (and more involved than) a WoW post, so I created this new feature for myself. Anyone is welcome to participate, or to share their own wants. If you do so on your own blog, leave a link so I can visit!

I don’t read a lot of contemporary YA, but every so often, I crave a little reality. It acts as a kind of palate cleanser when I’m overloaded on Paranormal and Dystopians fiction. Here are a few titles that have wandered onto my radar:

Want Now:

Beautiful Disaster has been around for a while. It’s gotten a fair amount of publicity, and now it’s being published in paperback–where it used to be just an ebook. There’s some controversy about the relationship in Beautiful Disaster, but I’m ready to give it a go all by myself.

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate percentage of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance between her and the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

Want Soon:

Can you guess what caught my eye on this cover? Yes, it’s Big Ben! I love a London setting, but I’m also pleased by the description of Jason as the class clown. I’m hoping this means there’s humor in this one…

Meant to be or not meant to be . . . that is the question.

It’s one thing to fall head over heels into a puddle of hazelnut coffee, and quite another to fall for the—gasp—wrong guy. Straight-A junior Julia may be accident prone, but she’s queen of following rules and being prepared. That’s why she keeps a pencil sharpener in her purse and a pocket Shakespeare in her, well, pocket. And that’s also why she’s chosen Mark Bixford, her childhood crush, as her MTB (“meant to be”).

But this spring break, Julia’s rules are about to get defenestrated (SAT word: to be thrown from a window) when she’s partnered with her personal nemesis, class-clown Jason, on a school trip to London. After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts . . . from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to break a few rules along the way. And thus begins a wild goose chase through London, leading Julia closer and closer to the biggest surprise of all: true love.

Because sometimes the things you least expect are the most meant to be.

Want Someday:

Humor and vintage? Count me in!

March 26, 2013

When Mallory discovers that her boyfriend, Jeremy, is cheating on her with an online girlfriend, she swears off boys. She also swears off modern technology. Inspired by a list of goals her grandmother made in 1962, Mallory decides to “go vintage” and return to a simpler time (when boyfriends couldn’t cheat on you online). She sets out to complete grandma’s list: run for pep club secretary, host a dinner party, sew a homecoming dress, find a steady, do something dangerous. But the list is trickier than it looks. And obviously finding a steady is out . . . no matter how good Oliver (Jeremy’s cousin) smells. But with the help of her sister, she’ll get it done. Somehow. Lindsey Leavitt perfectly pairs heartfelt family moments, laugh-out-loud humor, and a little bit of romance in this delightful contemporary novel.

I have no interest in Beautiful Disaster but I really want to read Meant to Be and Going Vintage-I’ve loved everything Leavitt’s written and I bet this will be no exception!

    • Ruby says:

No interest in Beautiful Disaster? Why, if I may ask? I know some people found it to be objectionable, content-wise.

I haven’t read anything by Leavitt, but it’s good to know that she’s an author that people enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I just finished Beautiful Disaster. I highly recommend getting it in book form and avoiding the audio. I think the story will read right but the narrator sounds horribly young. It is super intense!

    • Ruby says:

I really like the paperback cover, anyway. It’s much better-looking than that hideous tongue image it had before. Too bad it’s not available as an ebook anymore.

  3. Small Review says:

I’m looking forward to Going Vintage. I really like her princess series and this one sounds cute too.

  4. You just reminded me that I need to read Mean To Be soon :P

Also, Going Vintage looks like it’s gonna be so good!
    Can’t wait for it.
